Studying in Australia: the essentials

How applying works

International students usually apply directly to each university. Many universities have intakes in February and July, and some offer foundation programmes if your school certificate needs an extra year.

Student visa

Once you accept an offer, the university sends a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). You then apply for a Student visa (subclass 500), with Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and proof that you are a genuine student. Check the latest rules on the Department of Home Affairs website.

After you graduate

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets eligible graduates stay and work in Australia for a period after their studies.
